Inside the Statler Hilton and Lake Cliff Tower
study through CCCCD where I attend each
semester and going to learn the old fashioned
way to shoot with sheet film and the 4x5
camera!
as I am looking for locations that might have a 60's flair
property manager, Patrick Muscanere, who was so kind
to indulge me with a look around and of
course... PHOTOS!
This morning I headed out for downtown and the
for a possible photo shoot.
about the Statler and it's condition and hope of
restoration,I was quite surprised to find workers all over
the place doing various clean up on the old building.
The building was sort of open, a fellow asked me if i was
meeting someone there, so i answered no, that i was
just hoping to take a few photos. A little while later
I was able to snap a few inside the lobby, which was
really a special treat for me!~
Conrad Hilton was so proud of this grand, flagship
hotel, and it's stairway was known far and wide!
The hotel was opened in 1956, I believe, and was so far
that it was a real treat to attend a function there or have
the opportunity to spend a few nights there. Ask Conrad,
he flew stars in such as Jane Mansfield and maybe Marilyn,
it was quite a happenin' place in the 50-60's!

Just looking at and judging by these lobby and entrance photos, this is still a very sharp building !
Thanks for sharing some fairly rare interior photos of this fantastic building ! Once the clean-up is done and some mid-century style furnishings are spread around this great looking lobby space, it's "hipness" will slap folks in the face again . I'm in Boston but would love to see this place in person. The glass/crystal wall lights are amazing, wonder if they are original ?
I practically grew up in that building and to see it look the way it does breaks my heart. The floors were carpeted with reds and blues. It was lively. I have so many wonderful memories. If I had the money I would return it to its glory days.
At one time, my grandfather was the night manager, my grandmother was the manager of the cigar stand, and for a short time my father was a bellman.
I replay stories of celebrities that were told to me, both bad and good such as when my grandfather told Elvis he could not stay there, how he did not like Ricky Nelson be sneaking out the back of the hotel to avoid fans, and how my grandmother became friends with Danny Thomas and how they played jokes on each other.
Now that I live in Florida, I am not able to see what is going on with the building. I remember so much, but sadly I remember the last time I was in the building in 2000. There were bellman still working there from the 60's and 70's who fondly remember my grandparents and my dad.
I just wish I could turn back time, because being there was like being at home.
